John Underhill narrates this story. Mr. Russell had arranged for the
minister from Fourth Memorial church to have his wedding. The day came,
but the minister didn't. The minister sent a replacement. The man was
upset, and never forgot the incident. 30 years later, Carolyn had a
garage sale. My mother was there helping. A neighbour came over and they
introduced themselves. He said, "Underhill, are you related to a
minister?"
"Yes, my husband is one."
"Well, I could tell you a thing or two."
Mom said, "Go ahead, I've heard it all."
"30 years ago he was supposed to marry..." and he told his story. Mom asked, "How long ago was that?" "30 years" he said. "Well, it couldn't have been my husband. We only moved here 25 years ago." For 30 years Mr. Russell had been bitter at the wrong man!
It is a pitiable state to go on, holding grudges at other people for previous bad experiences with someone else. Excess luggage, is what I call them. This is a typical recurrent issue in many relationships today - marital or professional. Everyone of us have been hurt, offended or disappointed at some point. We too have hurt others ourselves.
No matter how long you punish your current fiancé for the wrongs of the last one, you will never be justified. That you were framed by your former boss doesn't make your present boss guilty. Whatever your experience, you'll never move forward looking back. Let go, and let God!
Let us pray: Father, I let go of every grudge, in Jesus name.
