WHAT ABOUT YOU?

"If you don’t live for something you’ll die for nothing." - Unknown
When it was built for an international exposition in the last century, the structure was called monstrous by the citizens of the city, who demanded it be torn down as soon as the exposition was over. Yet from the moment its architect first conceived it, he took pride in it and loyally defended it from those who wished to destroy it. He knew it was destined for greatness. Today it is one of the architectural wonders of the modern world and stands as the primary landmark of Paris, France. The architect, of course, was Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. This famous tower was built in 1889.

Tradition holds that the Apostles died for their belief amidst fierce criticisms, and rejection. Like the Eiffel tower, the Apostles were rejected. Mark died at Alexandria, after being dragged through the streets of that city. John was put in a pot of boiling oil, but escaped death in a miraculous manner. He was then banished to Patmos. Peter was crucified at Rome with his head downward. James, the Less, was thrown from the pinnacle of the temple, and then beaten to death with a fuller's club. Andrew was bound to a cross, he continued to preached to his persecutors

A BROTHER'S KEEPER

"The penalty that good men pay for not being interested in politics is to be governed by men worse than themselves." - Plato

Brother's Keeper
The nice thing about apathy is that you don't have to exert yourself to show you're sincere about it. It comes naturally. Whose responsibility should it be to make it right, or lend a helping hand, everyone, or someone?

When Rosina Hernandez was in college, she attended a rock concert at which one young man was brutally beaten by another. No one made any attempt to stop the beating. The next day she was struck dumb to learn that the youth had died as a result of the pounding. Yet neither she nor anyone else had raised a hand to help him. She could never forget the incident or her responsibility as an inactive bystander. Years later, she saw another catastrophe. A car driving in the rain ahead of her suddenly skidded and plunged into Biscayne Bay. The car landed head down in the water with only the tail end showing. In a moment a woman appeared on the surface, shouting for help and saying her husband was stuck inside. This time Rosina waited for no one. She plunged into the water, tried unsuccessfully to open the car door, then pounded on the

GOOD SAMARITAN

"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." - William James

A man called up the local armoury to get the status of the weapons and vehicles. "We've got 3 Jeeps, 4 Tanks, 500 rifles, and a ton of ammo. Oh, we also have two Cadillacs for the fat generals." Replied the private. There was silence, then "Private, do you know who I am?" "No." "I'm General Westin." "General, do you know who I am?" "No." "See you later, fatty."

Dr. Seuss said, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better..." Anonymity isn't only for mischief, but lofty acts. Jean Oberlin in 18th century, traveling in winter was caught in a severe snowstorm. He lost his way in the blowing snow and feared freezing to death. In despair, he sat not knowing where to go. A man came to his rescue, took Oberlin to the next village and made sure he would be cared for.

THE SECRET III

"Only the holy spirit, the spirit of the lord, can transform us." - Joseph Prince

Many people reading this today. Must have heard of the Poem, Humpty Dumpty. My concern is how he fell, from a height and couldn't be put back together again: not even by the kings men, or horses. The poem states that 'his fall' was great. It's amazing how that poem so succinctly illustrates, a spiritually correct scenario today. We have been examining America's slide from greatness to where it is now, since the foundation of their greatness 'righteousness,' was jettisoned.

Today, especially when much of society ridicules and mocks those who are serious about their faith in God, and uphold righteousness it is very common, to

THE SECRET II

"It is wickedness, to whip a child and also force him not to cry." - Traditional Proverb

When William J. Bennett compiled the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, a statistical portrait of America, see his findings: since 1960, while the gross domestic product has nearly tripled, violent crime has increased at least 560%. Divorces have more than doubled. The percentage of children in single-parent homes had tripled. By the end of the decade 40% of all American births and 80% of minority births will occur out of wedlock. These are not good things to get used to. In 1940 teachers identified the top problems in America's schools as: Talking out of turn, chewing gum, making noise and running in the hall. In 1990, teachers listed drugs, alcohol, pregnancy, suicide, rape and assault. These are not good things to get used to, either.

There is a coarseness, a callousness and a cynicism to our era. The worst of it has to do with our children - the supposed "generationext." Our culture seems almost dedicated

THE SECRET!

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." - Mark Twain

Alexis de Tocqueville, a foremost French writer, after visiting America in 1831, said, "I sought for the greatness of the United States in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields, and boundless forests--and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich mines, her vast world commerce, her public school system, and in her institutions of higher learning--and it was not there. I looked for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution--and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!"

It is NOT POSSIBLE to have a moral individual, community or nation without faith in Jesus Christ, and God, because without that faith, everything boils down to "me," and "me" alone is meaningless. Today Americans have stopped acting in terms of their own moral, ethical and religious beliefs and principles. They've stopped acting on what they knew was right -- and

THE, AMEN.

"To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible." - Thomas Aquinas

Let us attempt a little study on the word, Amen. This is a most remarkable Word, it was transliterated directly from Hebrew into Greek, of the New Testament, and then further into Latin and into English, then into many other languages: it is practically a universal Word. It has been said to be the best known word in human vocabulary. The word is directly related to the Hebrew word for "believe" (Aman), or "Faithful." Thus, it came to mean "Sure" or "Truly," an expression of absolute trust and confidence. The believer's response to a declaration from God is an, Amen - meaning to say, "so it will be!" Most commonly, it is translated in the New Testament as "verily" or "truly."

When we pray according to His will, we know God will answer, so we close with "Amen." Interestingly, we also conclude a hymn or anthem of praise to, and faith in God with an, Amen. It is also a title of Jesus Christ. His last letters to the seven churches begin with a remarkable salutation - by the

THE RATTLER CALLED LIFE II: EYE BALL TO EYE BALL

"Like yeast, it's impressive how considerably an ounce of determination can make one's efforts grow and expand." - Richelle E. Goodrich

Continued:
"He made about eight attempts and managed to hit me with his nose just below my eye about four times...This chap and I were eyeball to eyeball and I found out that snakes don't blink...I had to choke him to death. It was the only way out. I was afraid that with all the blood rushing to my head I might pass out." When he tried to toss the dead snake aside, he couldn't let go--"I had to pry my fingers from its neck." Rathman, 45, who works for the Defense Department in San Jose, estimates his encounter with the snake lasted 20 minutes.
Warden Dave Smith says of meeting Rathman: "He walked toward me holding this string of rattles and said with a sort of grin on his face, 'I'd like to register a complaint about your wildlife here.'"

Life is like a Wildlife. Filled with dangerous things, and people that are hoping you'll drop dead: if not because you'll be food for them, then it's because you're occupying their space. A little

THE RATTLER CALLED LIFE

"I'm a dogged person. I respond to adversity with a steely resistance.” - Jennifer Egan

Jay Rathman climbed to a ledge on the slope of a rocky gorge, while hunting deer in the Tehema Wildlife in northern California. As he raised his head to look over the ledge above, a coiled rattler struck with lightning speed, missing his right ear. This snake's fangs got snagged in the neck of his wool turtleneck sweater - the force of the strike causing it to land on Jay's left shoulder: it then coiled around his neck. He grabbed it behind the head with his left hand, the rattles making a furious racket. He fell backward and slid headfirst down the steep slope. "As luck would have it, he ended up wedged between some rocks with his feet caught uphill from his head. He could barely move. Jay got his right hand on his rifle and used it to disengage the fangs from his sweater, but the snake had enough leverage to strike again.

It is amazing how prepared, when we set out on the journey called, life. We plot our course, and mark spots on our map, where each achievement should show up: you have a clear-cut idea how to get where. You set off, hoping to, like Jay get into the game, shoot down a few deers, and get back home. No hassles. Alas! you're

ADVICE

"The trouble with good advice is that it usually interferes with your plans." - Traditional

This morning, I will attempt to do something different, but equally impacting. As the heading suggests, it's going to be a compendium of advice. A traditional proverb says, "Good advice is what your own children disregard, but save to give to their children." How revealing. At work, never bring your boss a problem without some solution: you're getting paid to think, not to whine. Long hours don't mean anything; results count, not effort. Write down ideas; they get lost like good pens.

Always ensure you arrive work thirty minutes before your boss. Help other people at work, when you can - what goes around comes around. Don't take 'sick-days' unless you're truly sick.

FRANCH LOESCH

"Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." - Winston Churchill

In the prohibition years, Capone's rule was absolute. The local and state police and even the Federal Bureau of Investigation were afraid to oppose him. But single handedly, Frank Loesch, as a Christian layman organized the Chicago Crime Commission, a group of citizens who were determined to take Mr. Capone to court and put him away. Loesch wasn't a very imposing looking man, but in Chicago he was a living legend. He was the man who had stood up to Al Capone. During the months that the Crime Commission met, Frank Loesch's life was in constant danger. There were threats on the lives of his family and friends. But he never wavered. Ultimately he won the case against Capone and was the instrument for removing this blight from the city of Chicago. Frank Loesch had risked his life to live out

AFFIRMATION

"To give someone a blessing is the most significant affirmation we can offer." - Henri Nouwen

Andor Foldes first recollection was at seven: his father kissed and thanked him for helping in the garden. Foldes remembers it decades later, as though it were yesterday. Again at sixteen, while in Budapest. Foldes already a skilled pianist at the time, was asked by Emil von Sauer to play for him. Foldes obliged the master. When he finished, Sauer walked over to him and kissed him on the forehead. "My son," he said, "when I was your age I became a student of Liszt. He kissed me on the forehead after my first lesson, saying, 'Take good care of this kiss -- it comes from Beethoven, who gave it me after hearing me play.' I have waited for years to pass on this sacred heritage, but now I feel you deserve it."

I wish there were some way to effectively communicate the incredible blessing which affirming

ADVERSITY

"I'll say this for adversity: people seem to be able to stand it, and that's more than I can say for prosperity." - Kin Hubbard

Malcolm Muggeridge said in Homemade, July 1990, that "Contrary to what might be expected, I look back on experiences that at the time seemed especially desolating and painful with particular satisfaction. Indeed, I can say with complete truthfulness that everything I have learned in my 75 years in this world, everything that has truly enhanced and enlightened my experience, has been through affliction and not through happiness."

Quite thought provoking you'll agree. It's a known fact that, it's easier remembering and relating with adversity than it is, to relate to success. For instance, you remember a heartbreak better, and what lessons were in it for you as a person, than you do a friendly smile from a stranger in a bus. Listen, adversity often provides us with opportunities: adversity can promote our

HE SAID, BUT HE'S SAYING

"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates

Have you ever wondered, or tried to imagine what avenues God can chose to bless people? Or do you wonder if He's loving enough to even bless anyone just like that - out of the blues - in ways, mostly assumed to be 'not right.' You should've heard the expression, "Better lucky than good." The following story certainly exemplifies that thinking. Wisdom would have done something different with that $20 bill, and would have not won that million dollars.

Hubert Tang had not purchased a lottery ticket in ten years. But he decided to, when he found a twenty dollar bill lying on the street - so he buys two scratch-off tickets. While still standing just outside the store, he scratched them, and turning to a friend who was with him said, "I think I just won a million dollars!" And he did. Many people, they wouldn't have even picked
