"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." - William James
A man called up the local armoury to get the status of the weapons and vehicles. "We've got 3 Jeeps, 4 Tanks, 500 rifles, and a ton of ammo. Oh, we also have two Cadillacs for the fat generals." Replied the private. There was silence, then "Private, do you know who I am?" "No." "I'm General Westin." "General, do you know who I am?" "No." "See you later, fatty."
Dr. Seuss said, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better..." Anonymity isn't only for mischief, but lofty acts. Jean Oberlin in 18th century, traveling in winter was caught in a severe snowstorm. He lost his way in the blowing snow and feared freezing to death. In despair, he sat not knowing where to go. A man came to his rescue, took Oberlin to the next village and made sure he would be cared for.
As he prepared to go, Oberlin said, "Tell me your name so that I may at least have you in grateful remembrance before God." The man replied, "You're a minister. Please tell me the name of the Good Samaritan." "I cannot do that, for it's not given in the Scriptures." Oberlin replied, "Until you can tell me his name, please permit me to withhold mine."
Being good is commendable, but only when it is combined with doing good is it useful, because we are little pencils in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world. Jesus did good, and majority of the time He requested anonymity. Let's learn to be Good Samaritans, never seeking publicity, but effectively writing our part of God's love letter to an ailing world, that only our love can heal. God'll indeed reward you, in the open.
