“Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night.” - William Blake
Good Morning |
In my opinion the
Evening is arguably the most effective part of the day. Yes you may say “but
that is when one closes for the day” which is very true, but have you ever
noticed that every successful store keeper has a routine of taking stock in the
evening just before the close of business. This is not just true of store
keepers but should become true of our own lives. The evening is that period
where one re-evaluates the day. Did you achieve your objectives? What did you
miss? Did the things you did add to the overall objectives of the day or were
you just busy but not effective?
In his book,
"Facing Loneliness," Sanders goes on to emphasize that being
successful often fails to produce satisfaction or add to your purpose in life.
Then he refers to Henry Martyn, a distinguished scholar, as an example of what
he is talking about. Martyn, a Cambridge University student, was honoured at
only 20 years of age for his achievements in mathematics. In fact, he was given
the highest recognition possible in that field. And
yet he felt emptiness
inside. He said that instead of finding fulfillment in his achievements, he had
"only grasped a shadow.” After evaluating his life's goals, Martyn sailed
to India as a missionary at the age of 24. When he arrived, he prayed,
"Lord, let me burn out for You!” In the next 7 years that preceded his
death, he translated the New Testament into three difficult Eastern
languages!" He died at age 31!
Imagine if we didn’t
have to wait to be 25, 31 or 59 years before we re-evaluate our lives, imagine
if we did that re-evaluation every evening. What we don’t understand is that
when we say a person is 90 years old, what we are actually saying is that the
person has had 32,850 gifts of days on earth. Friends, start this evening to
keep a score sheet of your day, lay awake for at least an hour before sleeping
with a pen and paper in hand every evening and re-evaluate. This habit will
change your life in 2014. Interestingly, God’s day begins in the evening.
