THE GIFT OF A DAY (31); BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND YOUR DREAM

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.” - Norman Vincent Peale

Thomas Edison tried two thousand different materials in search of a filament for the light bulb. When none worked satisfactorily, his assistant complained, “All our work is in vain. We have learned nothing.” Edison replied very confidently, “Oh, we have come a long way and we have learned a lot. We know that there are two thousand elements which we cannot use to make a good light bulb.”

There may be days when you get up in the morning and things aren’t the way you had hoped they would be. That’s when you have to tell yourself that things will get better. There are times when people disappoint and let you down. Those are the times you must remind yourself to trust your own judgments and opinions, to keep your life focused on believing in yourself. There will be challenges to face, hurdles to scale and changes to make in your life, it's up to you to accept them. Constantly keep yourself headed in the right direction for you. It may not - will not - be easy at times, but in those times of struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are. So when those days filled with frustration and unexpected responsibilities come, remember to believe in yourself and all you want your life to be. The challenges and changes will only help you find the goals that you know are meant to come true for you.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (30); KEEP YOUR DREAM

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”- Unknown

Dream Again
During a fund raiser, in San Ysidro, he rises and tells a story. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. “That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal, of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail. He even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. “He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F, with a note that read, “see me after class.” “The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “why did I receive an F?” The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (29); SHAKE IT OFF

"Today is life-the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto." - Dale Carnegie
Shake it off
A story about a farmer whose mule fell into an abandoned well. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to get the mule out of the well, the farmer decided it was a hopeless situation. With sadness, the farmer figured that the only humane thing to do would be to haul truck loads of dirt to bury the old mule, while filling in the dangerous well, at the same time. He backed up the truck, and began to shovel in the dirt. The old mule, however, went berserk when the first load of dirt hit its back. That old mule started shaking off the dirt, stomping it down and stepping up a bit.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (28); ONE DAY AT A TIME

"The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time." - Abraham Lincoln
One Day

Sometimes we use certain terms and phrases without a thought as to how they originated. We hear things like, "one step at a time", "one day at a time", or even "one class at a time". Recently, I began to ponder on these phrases trying to really understand what they meant. Not long after I realized that, each one of these phrases has to do with the process involved in getting ANYTHING done. Everything seen today is a sequence of steps. Just like none of us alive today was born an adult, we all started as almost invisible sperms, and each day saw us transform. Life and ambitions are separated by time; which can be calibrated in days. Every day has it's peculiar lesson to be learned or taught.

Monica complained to her father, about how that her life was miserable that she didn’t know how she would succeed. She was tired of fighting all the time. It seemed as though when one problem was solved, another one lurking behind shows up. Her father, took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed each on the fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in another and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word. Monica, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what this dramatic old man was up to. After a while he turned off the heat from the pots. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He did the same with the eggs too. He then ladled the coffee out into a cup. Turning to her he asked. “what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked

THE GIFT OF A DAY (27); BREAK FREE

"Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records." - William Arthur Ward

Every man is an accumulation of experiences; pleasant, or unpleasant. We often witness in life the good, the bad and the ugly situations. Sometimes, more often than not we allow our minds to be set, and we refuse to change. Some, unaware that change is possible, while many others are unaware of the existence of something called change. For the most part some of us have believed the lie that "what you don't know won't kill you", when in actual fact its like this "what you don't know will kill you quickly". In the law court they say that ignorance is not an excuse. Just like a child will be burnt badly even though it doesn't know fire burns.

As a man was walking past the elephants at a circus, he was amazed at what he saw. He was confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held only by a small rope tied to their foot. No chains, no cages. These elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds if they wanted, but for some reason, they did not. Confused and puzzled he hailed the trainer nearby and asked why the elephants just stood there and made no attempt to get away.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (26); JUST ONE DAY

"For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something." - Steve Jobs

One Day
It's you, not events, that have the power to make you happy or unhappy today. You can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, to make that decision and I suggest you make decisions that are going to make you happy be happy in it.

Here's a story. "As a kid, I was always doing the right things. I was active in sports, school work and I was just a great kid to be around. However, one day my life changed for the worse. I was hanging out with some school kids, and I wanted to try out things I'd been told not to do. They had weed wrapped in a piece of paper and asked me to try it, that it wasn't a big deal...I took it between my fingers like I'd seen in movies; after it was lighted and took a drag. I'd started smoking pot.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (25); RETURN TO THE QUEUE

"Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort." - Paul J. Meyer

Focus
Henry David Thoreau, said once to "never look back unless you are planning to go that way." What a powerful statement that is. It just blows my mind to pieces.

Ever wondered how distracted we can become if we take our eyes off of our track? Press towards the price of the mark, never look back, make constant daily movements towards your plans with a bulldog tenacity; don't be distracted. Yes, sometimes it happens, even after we put our dedication and commitment things may get delayed or things may go wrong. Believe that providence has something great for you.

A little boy heard God was giving apples in heaven, so he went with excitement to get his. There was a queue waiting in line to get apples too so he joined in. While standing, fully excited and thrilled his turn came and he stretched both hands to take his apple, but his hands

THE GIFT OF A DAY (24); BE WISE, PLAN

"Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing." -
Thomas A. Edison

Be Wise, Plan
It's almost impossible to achieve anything significant without planning. You don't just happen on success, you plan to succeed, that's why we usually say, "if you fail to plan, you've planned to fail." Focus on your goals after drawing them up! You plan better with a goal, and you know your destination better with a plan. When we pre-plan a destination and then you set off, you'll most assuredly get to your destination, If you however fail to have a destination you'll still get there; a different destination actually!

To maximize your day, check out a few ideas.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (23) DON'T HOLD BACK

"Nobody can motivate himself in a positive direction by continually using negative words." - John C. Maxwell

The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes. That's the day we truly grow up. Many of us miss the opportunity of ever growing up because we allow ourselves to be discouraged by the inevitable "discouraging" circumstances and situations characteristic of this imperfect world!

Here's a story. Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile soil. The first seed said, "I want to grow! I want to send my roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts through the earth's crust above me ... I want to unfurl my tender buds like banners to announce the arrival of spring ...

THE GIFT OF A DAY (22): WHY NOT DELEGATE?

"There's the noble art of getting things done, and there's the noble art of living things undone" - Lin Yutang

Delegate
We all have heard about how important our "todays" are; each packed with boundless possibilities. However, the truth still remains that we will not be able to take adequate advantage of today without planning and taking conscious efforts. The day has been structured already, it's left for us to make it work.

"Thank you very much Marcus, that's a fantastic presentation. My professor was amazed, the facts were awesome. Thank you very much. I'm sure you're very gifted" Salome, said as she walked away. Still within earshot, she heard "You're such an incompetent and disappointing individual" (she couldn't understand why) Bart said, at the top of his voice. "How can you not deliver on a single promise?" He barked. "Sorry, sir it's just that my hands are full at the moment". Marcus said in defense. "Your hands are always full" retorted Bart, now fuming with rage. Just then his phone rang, it was Barbara. "Hey, Marc how 'bout that proposal is it ready for pick up. I need to send it within the hour?" "OK. I'll send it now" he replied as he ends the call. In truth he'd not even started on Barbara's proposal. Still fuming Bart yelled "I'm not leaving here until I get my job". "Oh, Marcus again", Lin said in a hushed tone as she passed by.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (21): HOW VALUABLE?

Do you know that our stories and history don't take more than a day to change? Have you ever sat down to think about how; you see a "single" friend today and the following day he's become "husband"? Change don't take a million years, it just takes only a single day.

Each day carries with it every ingredient necessary for changing our lives as it comes. The individual who decides to "while away" his time doesn't have a different day from the one who decides consciously to "maximize" his. Today is as valuable as any other.

A speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $500 Note. In the room with his audience, he asked, "who would like this $500?" Hands went up. He said, "I am
going to give this note to one of you, but first let me do this." He rumpled the note up in his closed fist. Then asked, "who still wants it?" Still, the hands were up in the air. "Well, what if I do this?" He replied and the dropped it on the ground as he began to trample it underfoot with his shoe. He picked it up now, all rumpled and dirty. "Who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. "Friends, you all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because
it did not decrease in value. It's still worth $ 500".

THE GIFT OF A DAY (20): YOUR DECISION

"Many people make decisions when things aren't going well. They look for relief in the despair of the valley instead of waiting for the clarity that comes from being on the mountaintop. And when you're experiencing the darkness of the valley, it's always tempting to make changes that you hope will relieve the discomfort." - John C. Maxwell

Abandoned
Examine this scenario, a group of children playing near two rail tracks, one track still functional while the other is abandoned. One child is playing on the abandoned track, as the rest played on the operational track. The train comes, and you are beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and save more than one of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Would you rather let the train go its way? Would you choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child and save the other children at the expense of the child who is playing on the right track? Knowing that this child had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place. Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where there is danger.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (19) MAXIMIZE TODAY III

“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists of the elimination of non essentials.” - Lin Yutang

Maximize Your Day
Most of us realize that certain people are always in motion but never being able to get things done; always chasing after time and wondering if nature cheated them, by cutting down the number of hours in their day to about 12hours only.

A professor stood in class with some items in front of him. Class began, and without saying a word, he picked up a large empty jar and filled it with rocks right to the top, rocks about 2" diameter. He then asked the class if the jar was full. They agreed it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them in to the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed. He asked his students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was again. He then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar, the sand filled up everything else. "Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (18); MAXIMIZE TODAY II

“Hell begins on that day when God grants us a clear vision of all that we might have achieved, of all the gifts we wasted, of all that we might have done that we did not do.” - Gian Menotti

Chose What Should Be Done Daily
Do you want to look back at your life years from now, and curse yourself for not taking certain decisions that you should have?
Maximizing and adequately using our day, makes a lot of difference in the long run.

Yesterday, we began talking about how we could make the most of our days by looking at some tips or advice. Let's continue today with some more tips.

1. Plan some down time.
Irrespective of your busy schedule, make sure to give yourself opportunity to take some "time-outs" to relax. This allows you function more efficiently; it makes you more productive all round; work, home or leisure. Having some sort of "power nap" on weekends can be a time waster or a great refresher, depending on how long you take, as well as your attitude toward it.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (17) MAXIMIZE TODAY

"Someone once defined hard work as the accumulation of the easy things you didn’t do when you should have." - Anonymous

To Do
Don't you find it amazingly thought provoking that some people seem to always get things done in a day; others find having things done to be a struggle. There definitely is something that separates a frantic, time-starved individual from a productive one? Surprisingly, it's not much. Time management is about managing YOURSELF DAILY. It’s making a commitment to be more organized, stay focused and maximize your time to your best advantage. Had there been more than 24 hours in a day, we would still find ways to fill them. Maximize your day by being more aware of how you spend it. With proper planning, you can establish a routine, create work around and use your time wisely.

Here’s some advice:

1. Get out of bed quickly.
The individuals who are time-starved, shuts off their alarm and doze off a couple more times before finally getting up. They usually end up over sleeping, and in doing so waste up to 30 minutes of their morning. Even if they do get to work on time, they've been rushed and stressed already upon arrival.

Try avoiding hitting the snooze button by moving your alarm away from easy reach once it goes off. Once you get up to shut it off, head straight for the shower and start your day. Be a time conscious person and rise when the alarm wakes you instead of wasting time, complaining in bed. You’ll arrive at work looking refreshed and ready to tackle the day’s challenges.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (16): FACE IT TODAY

Face Your Fear

"You may have a million reasons not to get started now. But deep down, none of them can be as compelling as your desire to change, grow, and succeed. In a month or a year or five years from now, you may have only one regret - that you didn’t start now. Today matters. The way you spend today really can change your life." - J.C Maxwell

He has always thought of a better life; though he had a job, somehow, he knew that he couldn't just get all he needed in life from only a paid job. As a child he dreaded any form of business because he grew up in the streets. In an environment where he had to do business (hawk wares) to survive and he didn't quite enjoy it. Now he's an adult, but his childhood demons (about business) were still haunting him. He knows he'd run too long, he had to face his demons now if he ever wants to get her all he desires to get her; a fantastic life. He loves her so much; she is the one for him, he's so certain about it, he could perceive it in his gut! He kept looking out for business opportunities but each time he got one, the fear of failure and inadequacy gripped him so hard that he shrieks and most of the time he let's it slip past him. Now, he has a gut feeling, that this next one was going to be "it" for him. It isn't quite new, but he'd mentally brushed it off years before. Now that he decided to face his demons, the opportunity re-surfaced almost miraculously and he has to make up his mind as the days go by, drawing him closer to the signing, and registration for this business. Somehow, in his gut he knew - could almost feel the success in this one - but his demons are staring wide eyed, grinning like they always have expecting him to back out. He was used to that.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (15) WHAT'S YOUR BIG PICTURE? II

"You may have a million reasons not to get started TODAY. But deep down, none of them can be as compelling as your desire to change, grow, and succeed. In a month or a year or five years from now, you may have only one regret - that you didn’t start today. Today matters. The way you spend today really can change your life...positively or negatively" _ J.C Maxwell

Big Picture
Someone once defined hard work as the accumulation of the easy things you didn’t do today - when you should have - but left it till tomorrow. Life becomes hard or difficult when we neglect, or procrastinate on the little, easy, and important things to a later day; this seems to add to the burden of tomorrow before it even gets here. A decision taken today might be painful, inconvenient or embarrassing but years later while enjoying the fruits of that decision, you'll forget the pain and discomfort you felt taking that decision. On the other hand a decision NOT TAKEN today might seem exciting, wise or fulfilling, but years later when the pain of not taking the decision years before envelopes you...you'll look back and curse yourself for having procrastinated.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (04); GOOD EVENING!!!

“Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night.” - William Blake

Good Morning

In my opinion the Evening is arguably the most effective part of the day. Yes you may say “but that is when one closes for the day” which is very true, but have you ever noticed that every successful store keeper has a routine of taking stock in the evening just before the close of business. This is not just true of store keepers but should become true of our own lives. The evening is that period where one re-evaluates the day. Did you achieve your objectives? What did you miss? Did the things you did add to the overall objectives of the day or were you just busy but not effective?

In his book, "Facing Loneliness," Sanders goes on to emphasize that being successful often fails to produce satisfaction or add to your purpose in life. Then he refers to Henry Martyn, a distinguished scholar, as an example of what he is talking about. Martyn, a Cambridge University student, was honoured at only 20 years of age for his achievements in mathematics. In fact, he was given the highest recognition possible in that field. And

THE GIFT OF A DAY (03); GOOD AFTERNOON

“In my afternoon walk I would fain forget all my morning occupations and my obligations to society.” - Henry David Thoreau

Good Afternoon
The part of the day with the highest concentration of activities is usually the “Afternoon”, it is the practical phase of the day, the opportunity to implement the ideas of the morning and stick to our priority list and plan. However, the afternoon is one part of the day when you should expect the unexpected. What happens when people don’t react the way you planned, when everything seems to fall out of place? The capacity to fully utilize the gift of a day is most times dependent on your ability to react to change.

British sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein was once visited in his studio by the eminent author and fellow Briton, George Bernard Shaw. The visitor noticed a huge block of stone standing in one corner and asked what it was for. "I don't know yet. I'm still making plans." Shaw was astounded. "You mean you plan your work. Why, I change my mind several times a day!" "That's all very well with a four-ounce manuscript," replied the sculptor, "but not with a four-ton block of stone."

THE GIFT OF A DAY (02); GOOD MORNING!!!

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” - Marcus Aurelius

Good Morning
The modern day as we know it is divided into 3 parts, the Morning, Afternoon, and Night. As we examine "the gift of a day", let me begin with the most important part of the day, “the Morning”. The lifestyle of the 21st century in my opinion is designed to rob you of the morning. For some people it is almost impossible to recall a day in 2013 that they were not in a break neck hurry every morning. In mega-cities around the world, people practically eat breakfast, make-up, and even brush their teeth en route work. There is never enough time to create a mental picture of your day before embarking on it. It’s like building a skyscraper on a hurried foundation. Interestingly, the morning is the foundation of your day.

THE GIFT OF A DAY (01): TODAY IS A GIFT!!!

“Forget yesterday - it has already forgotten you. Don't sweat tomorrow - you haven't even met. Instead, open your eyes and your heart to a truly precious gift - today.” - Steve Maraboli

Today is A Gift
